Men and masculinity and the differences between men and women have long been subjects of interest and debate to Michael Kimmel, internationally recognized author and sociologist. On Thursday, April 14, Kimmel will give two presentations at ÂÌñÒùÆÞ. His first talk, What About the Boys? Masculinity and Risk is at noon in the Wege Student Center Ballroom. Kimmel's second presentation at 7 p.m., also in the Ballroom, is titled, Not Mars
or Venus, but Planet Earth: Women and Men in the New Millennium. This talk is free

Kimmel is the author or editor of numerous books on gender, society and manhood, including "Sexualities: Identities, Behaviors and Society," "The Gendered Society" and "Manhood in America." Kimmel's course on "Sociology of Masculinity" is one of the few courses in the nation that examines men's lives from a pro-feminist perspective. His work has been featured in national newspapers and magazines including The New York Times Book Review, The Harvard Business Review, The Washington Post, The Nation, The Village Voice and Psychology Today where he was contributing editor and columnist on male-female relationships. Kimmel has appeared on television programs, including "Donahue," "Crossfire" and "The Today Show." He is currently the editor of the international interdisciplinary journal "Men and Masculinities."

Currently a professor of sociology at State University of New York at Stony Brook, New York, Kimmel received his doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley, his master of arts from Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island and his bachelor of arts from Vassar College, Poughkeepsie, New York. He is the national spokesperson for the National Organization for Men Against Sexism (NOMAS) and has lectured at over 200 colleges and universities, and run workshops for organizations and public sector organizations on preventing sexual harassment and implemented gender equity. He has also lectured on run workshops for campus groups on date and acquaintance rape, sexual assault, pornography and the changing relations between women and men. On the basis of his expertise, Kimmel has served as an expert witness for the U.S. Department of Justice in the Virginia Military Institute and Citadel cases.
